things that make me smile

Walking in the Plateau neighborhood of Montreal

One of my good friends is submitting her PhD thesis at the end of this week, and she is working like crazy around the clock to incorporate revisions in time to meet the deadline. She realized that the the was repeated twice in one of her completed chapters, as in this sentence. How is it that you can read something a zillion times and a silly mistake like that goes unnoticed? It reminded me of how I thought "alot" was one, not two, words all the way into college (in my defense, no one ever corrected me!). She sent me this hilarious blog post - I will never again forget the distinction between a lot and alots, the cute, furry, imaginary animal!

March sun.

It has been hard to believe these last few days that it is only March. I was not alone on a stroll through Parc Lafontaine, but nestled between benches of people reading and lunching are small piles of entrenched snow!

a beginning.

Today it somewhere-between-snow-and-rained in Montreal, and looking out my window as the white flakes became water reminded me that spring is just around the corner. This time of year always feels like a new beginning to me - everything feels fresh and fertile and ready to grow. That energy must be working its magic on me too, because I have been feeling an urge to do something different. As a PhD student, I have spent a lot of time reading and writing, but always in an academic style, about academic subjects. I am starting this blog to do something different - just write and see where it goes! I hope to collect ideas and inspiration in this space, and to share them with you.
